Asthma Q&A

What is asthma?

Asthma is a common respiratory disease that causes airway inflammation and shrinkage, making it harder to breathe. The disease happens in episodes called asthma attacks.

An asthma attack can feel like trying to draw air through a cotton-stuffed straw. Common symptoms of an asthma attack include shortness of breath, coughing, chest tightness, chest discomfort, and wheezing.

Many people with asthma don’t have major symptoms between attacks, but attacks may occur at any time, particularly when you’re exposed to asthma triggers.

What are asthma triggers?

Some of the more common asthma triggers are:

  • Tobacco smoke
  • Allergies to pets, mold, pests like mice, and dust mites
  • Heavy exercise
  • Cold and dry air
  • Respiratory infections
  • Cleaning and disinfectant products
  • Strong fragrances, like perfumes
  • Strong emotions (and the altered breathing that can go with them)

Most people have certain asthma triggers that they learn to identify in time, but every person’s triggers can be unique.

How is asthma treated?

Identifying your asthma triggers can be an important part of treatment. When you narrow down the circumstances that trigger your flare-ups, you can dramatically reduce your asthma attack frequency by making a few lifestyle changes. Additionally, most people with asthma need medication.

The two main types of asthma medicines are quick-relief (“rescue”) medicines, such as albuterol inhalers, and preventive (“control”) medications, which are also usually inhalers. Most people need both kinds of asthma medication. Combination inhalers, with both types of medications, are also available today.

If you’re having difficulty controlling your asthma, you might need an additional treatment, for example oral steroids, biologic injections, or intravenous (IV) infusions.

How can I tell if my asthma isn’t under control?

Because people with asthma are accustomed to having breathing problems and other symptoms, they might not always realize when their asthma is reaching a danger point.

If you have asthma symptoms more than twice a week, need to use your rescue medicine more than twice a week, or wake up due to asthma symptoms more than twice a month, it’s time to schedule an appointment to discuss your treatment approach and consider making changes.

Asthma is a controllable disease, and the Primary Medical Physicians, LLC team can help you with lifestyle changes and medication that maximize your ability to live a full and active life. If you’re struggling with asthma, call the office in your area or book an appointment online today.
