Medical Marijuana Q&A

What is medical marijuana?

Medical marijuana is the use of marijuana products to treat medical problems. The state of Florida first legalized medical marijuana in 2014, and they’ve since expanded its use.

Today, people with certain chronic conditions can visit the Primary Medical Physicians, LLC team for a medical marijuana evaluation to determine whether medical marijuana is the right treatment approach for their needs.

If qualified, you can apply for a Medical Marijuana Use Registry (MMUR) identification card. This card enables you to purchase marijuana from state-licensed dispensaries (medical marijuana treatment centers).

The Primary Medical Physicians, LLC team specifies a marijuana dosage and treatment route, for example, inhalation, edibles, or tinctures, that you’ll follow when filling your prescriptions.

Who qualified for a medical marijuana card?

The state of Florida lists the following conditions as qualifying for a medical marijuana card.

  • Cancer
  • Epilepsy
  • Glaucoma
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
  • Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Diagnosed terminal conditions
  • Chronic noncancer pain from a qualifying medical condition
  • Chronic noncancer pain that persists longer than expected (due to a qualifying condition)

In addition, Florida law states that medical conditions of the same type or class, or those comparable to the qualifying conditions, can also qualify patients for medical marijuana cards at the medical provider’s discretion.

This opens the list of qualifying conditions far wider. So, you may qualify if you have another condition that causes chronic pain, difficulty functioning day to day, or other ongoing health problems. Some common examples of conditions that may qualify under this rule include arthritis, chronic insomnia, and anxiety disorders.

Essentially, if you have a chronic condition that limits your ability to live a full life, you could potentially be a good candidate for medical marijuana.

How long are medical marijuana cards good for?

Your MMUR ID card is good for one year. You must submit a new application 45 days before expiration. The Primary Medical Physicians, LLC team performs a new evaluation annually before submitting your updated information.
